CBT's Communities Adapting to Climate Change initiative supports the planning process.  Each community will implement and monitor their plan thereafter.

This resource kit has been created based on the planning process and will be updated in the future when learning takes place regarding implementation and monitoring. This will include hurdles and successes, including how to pay for some of the adaptive solutions.

To help share knowledge and learning:

  • Kimberley and Elkford project contacts will participate as mentors in the CBT Regional Adaptation Learning Network.  This also provides opportunity to share implementation updates.
  • CBT is creating a simple monitoring framework for Phase One (2008-2009) communities to mark progress and learning for two years. Click here for Discussion Questions for Post-Project Review.

Reflections from Elkford

The ultimate success of a climate adaptation plan is dependent on the willingness of the community to implement and act upon the recommendations. The District of Elkford has demonstrated significant dedication to ensure the community moves towards increased resiliency. The District has taken the appropriate first steps of integrating long-term planning processes with climate projections to ensure decisions are being made with the future in mind. Success can be measured by the implementation of the strategies within the allocated time frame.

It is recommended that the individuals responsible for each action review the strategies on a regular basis to gauge progress on implementation. The Elkford consulting team acknowledges the challenges of funding and capital expenditure that exists at the local government level. The District of Elkford should adjust the time frames, if necessary, based on unexpected events and/or changing community priorities.

Reflections from Kimberley

Next steps for the City of Kimberley will entail creating a process to review, adopt and channel the project’s recommendations to appropriate leads or champions, monitor progress on implementation, and report back to local residents as well as CBT in 2010 and at future agreed intervals. CBT will provide a simple monitoring framework for its first two pilot communities (Kimberley and Elkford) to assist with this process.
